Description
The Haptoglobin test measures the level of haptoglobin, a protein produced by the liver that binds free hemoglobin released from red blood cells. This test is primarily used to evaluate red blood cell destruction (hemolysis) and helps assess causes of fatigue, anemia, or unexplained weakness.
Why This Test Matters
Haptoglobin plays a key role in clearing free hemoglobin from circulation. When red blood cells break down prematurely, haptoglobin levels decrease as it binds and removes this free hemoglobin.
Low haptoglobin levels may indicate:
- Hemolytic anemia
- Increased red blood cell destruction
- Internal bleeding or recent transfusion
- Certain liver conditions
Normal or elevated levels may be seen in:
- Inflammatory states
- Stable red blood cell production
Who Should Consider This Test
- Individuals with unexplained fatigue or weakness
- Suspected anemia or abnormal CBC results
- Evaluation of possible hemolysis
- Follow-up to elevated LDH or abnormal bilirubin levels
Preparation
- No fasting required
