Description
A Direct Bilirubin test measures the amount of conjugated bilirubin in the blood. Direct bilirubin is bilirubin that has been processed by the liver so it can be eliminated from the body through bile.
What Does This Test Evaluate?
Direct bilirubin testing can provide information about:
- Liver function
- Bile production and flow
- Possible bile duct obstruction
- Gallbladder and biliary tract disorders
- Causes of jaundice
- Abnormalities found on other liver tests
Why Test Direct Bilirubin?
An elevated direct bilirubin level may occur when the liver has difficulty properly excreting bilirubin or when the normal flow of bile is impaired. It may be seen with certain liver diseases, bile duct obstruction, gallstones, or other hepatobiliary conditions.
Direct bilirubin is often interpreted along with total bilirubin and other liver tests to help distinguish different patterns of bilirubin elevation.
