Description
The Renal Function Panel with GFR is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates how well your kidneys are functioning. It measures multiple markers to assess kidney filtration, waste removal, and electrolyte balance. The estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is included to determine how efficiently your kidneys filter blood, providing critical insight into kidney health and early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Purpose of the Test
- Assess overall kidney function
- Detect early signs of kidney disease or damage
- Monitor patients with hypertension, diabetes, or other risk factors
- Evaluate electrolyte and acid-base balance
- Guide treatment decisions for kidney-related conditions
- Monitor medications that may affect kidney function
Who Should Consider This Test?
- Individuals with high blood pressure or diabetes
- Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Those experiencing fatigue, swelling, or changes in urination
- Individuals on medications that can impact kidney function
- People with a family history of kidney disease
- Routine health monitoring for adults over 40
What the Test Measures
The Renal Function Panel includes:
- Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Indicates waste buildup in the blood
- Creatinine: Measures kidney filtration efficiency
- eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate): Calculates kidney filtration rate based on creatinine, age, sex, and race
- Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, and Bicarbonate: Assess electrolyte balance
- Calcium: Evaluates kidney and parathyroid function
- Additional markers may include albumin, phosphorus, and other kidney-related analytes
Abnormal results may indicate reduced kidney function, electrolyte imbalances, or early kidney disease, which require follow-up with a healthcare provider.
Fasting Required?
Fasting is not required.
