Description

Alpha 1 Antitrypsin test assesses the level of the protein Alpha 1 Antitrypsin (AAT) in the blood in order to evaluate the cause or risk of emphysema or lung disfunction by Alpha-1-Antitrypsin deficiency. A low level of AAT indicates a risk of developing emphysema or lung disease.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a genetic disease, which means it passed down to you from your parents. It can cause serious lung or liver disease.

This test should be performed if you have certain symptoms such as asthma that does not get better, shortness of breath, wheezing, frequent colds, flu, bronchitis, etc.
