Description
BNP, or B-type natriuretic peptide, is a hormone that helps regulate blood circulation and fluid balance. It is sometimes called brain natriuretic peptide because it was first discovered in brain tissue.
What BNP Does
- Released by the heart in response to increased blood volume or stress
- Signals the kidneys to remove excess salt and water from the body
- Levels rise when the heart is working harder than normal, such as during heart failure
Why the BNP Test Is Important
- Diagnosing Heart Failure: BNP is a quick and reliable marker for detecting heart failure.
- Monitoring Treatment: BNP levels can indicate whether heart failure is improving or worsening.
- Evaluating Shortness of Breath: Helps distinguish between cardiogenic (heart-related) and non-cardiogenic causes of dyspnea.
Fasting: Not required.
