Description

BNP, or B-type natriuretic peptide, is a hormone that helps regulate blood circulation and fluid balance. It is sometimes called brain natriuretic peptide because it was first discovered in brain tissue.

What BNP Does

  • Released by the heart in response to increased blood volume or stress
  • Signals the kidneys to remove excess salt and water from the body
  • Levels rise when the heart is working harder than normal, such as during heart failure

Why the BNP Test Is Important

  • Diagnosing Heart Failure: BNP is a quick and reliable marker for detecting heart failure.
  • Monitoring Treatment: BNP levels can indicate whether heart failure is improving or worsening.
  • Evaluating Shortness of Breath: Helps distinguish between cardiogenic (heart-related) and non-cardiogenic causes of dyspnea.

Fasting: Not required.
