Description
BNP stands for B-type natriuretic peptide, a hormone that helps regulate blood circulation. It's also known as brain natriuretic peptide because it was first discovered in brain tissue.
What it does
- BNP is released by the heart in response to increased blood volume or stress
- BNP prompts the kidneys to remove salt and water from the body
- BNP levels increase when the heart is working harder than normal, such as during heart failure
Why it's important
- A BNP test is a quick and important tool for diagnosing heart failure
- BNP levels can help determine if heart failure is getting better or worse
- BNP levels can help distinguish between cardiogenic and non-cardiogenic causes of dyspnea
Fasting not required.
