A basic metabolic panel (BMP) is a blood test that measures several substances in your blood to assess your general health:
Glucose
- A type of sugar that is your body's main energy source. High glucose levels may indicate diabetes.
Electrolytes
- These minerals help control your body's fluid balance, pH balance, and the movement of nutrients and waste. Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, and carbon dioxide.
BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and Creatinine
- Waste products removed from your blood by your kidneys.
Calcium
- An important mineral that helps your nerves, muscles, and heart function properly.
