Description
HLA-B51 Genetic Susceptibility Testing
Behçet’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect multiple areas of the body, including the mouth, eyes, skin, joints, blood vessels, and genital area.
The Kashi Behçet’s Disease Genetic Test evaluates HLA-B*51:01, an important genetic marker associated with increased susceptibility to Behçet’s disease.
What Does the Test Measure?
The test determines whether you carry the HLA-B51 genetic marker associated with Behçet’s disease.
HLA-B51 is one of the strongest known genetic associations with Behçet’s disease. However, carrying HLA-B51 does not mean that you have Behçet’s disease or that you will develop it.
Who May Consider Testing?
HLA-B51 testing may provide additional information when Behçet’s disease is being considered because of symptoms such as:
• Recurrent mouth ulcers • Recurrent genital ulcers • Eye inflammation or recurrent eye symptoms • Unexplained skin lesions • Joint pain or inflammation • Recurrent inflammatory symptoms • Vascular or neurological symptoms associated with a suspected inflammatory disorder
Simple Genetic Testing
This is a genetic test, so your HLA type does not change over time. Testing generally only needs to be performed once in your lifetime.
Important: HLA-B51 Does Not Diagnose Behçet’s Disease
Behçet’s disease remains primarily a clinical diagnosis.
A positive HLA-B51 result can support evidence of genetic susceptibility but cannot confirm Behçet’s disease. Likewise, a negative HLA-B51 result does not exclude the condition.
Results should be considered along with symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and other appropriate laboratory evaluation.
