Description
Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) is a small protein primarily used as a marker to detect the presence and progression of certain cancers, particularly blood cancers like multiple myeloma, as elevated levels in the blood can indicate a larger tumor mass and poorer prognosis; it also serves as an indicator of kidney damage due to its filtration process in the kidneys, where high levels in urine can signify kidney dysfunction.
Function in the immune system:
- B2M is a crucial component of the MHC Class I molecule on cell surfaces, which plays a vital role in presenting antigens to the immune system, allowing cytotoxic T cells to recognize and destroy infected or cancerous cells.
Fasting not required.
