Description
A blood film parasite smear, also called a Giemsa stain, is a blood test used to detect parasites in the bloodstream. This test is commonly used to diagnose parasitic infections such as malaria, babesiosis, and filariasis.
Why This Test Is Important
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by a parasite transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Symptoms can develop as early as 7 days after a bite and may include:
- Fever and chills
- Headache and muscle aches
- Fatigue or tiredness
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
A blood smear allows doctors to confirm the presence of parasites, determine their type, and guide appropriate treatment.
Fasting: Not required.
