Description

Bruising disorders are conditions that make it easier for you to bruise, which can be a sign of a bleeding disorder or other medical condition.

Bleeding disorders

  • Hemophilia: A rare, inherited bleeding disorder that prevents the body from producing enough clotting factors
  • Von Willebrand disease: A rare, inherited bleeding disorder that prevents the body from producing enough von Willebrand protein, which is important for clotting
  • Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP): A bleeding disorder that can be temporary or permanent

Other conditions

  • Aplastic anemia: A bone marrow disorder that can cause easy bruising
  • Henoch-Schonlein purpura: A disease that can cause bleeding and problems with the kidneys or intestines
  • Cushing's syndrome: A condition that causes the body to produce too much cortisol, which can thin the skin and make it more likely to bruise
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS): A group of inherited diseases that affect the connective tissue, including the skin, blood vessels, and joints
  • Liver disease: Conditions like cirrhosis can affect blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising
  • Vitamin deficiencies: Deficiencies in vitamins C and K can make it harder for your blood to clot

The following test are included:

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

Fibrinogen Panel

PT/PTT

Fasting not required.

Additional information about each test is listed below:

A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that can help doctors diagnose bruising disorders by identifying issues with the number and type of blood cells. A CBC can also help monitor conditions that affect blood cell counts, such as those that cause bruising.

A fibrinogen panel is a blood test that measures fibrinogen levels and detects genetic variants that cause fibrinogen disorders. A fibrinogen test may be ordered if you have a history of excessive bruising or other signs of a bleeding disorder.

A partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test and a prothrombin time (PT) test are important for diagnosing bleeding disorders and clotting problems that cause bruising. These tests measure how long it takes for blood to clot, which can help determine the cause of abnormal bleeding or bruising.
