Description
The Calcitonin Blood Test measures the level of calcitonin, a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Calcitonin plays a role in regulating calcium levels in the body, but more importantly, it serves as a tumor marker for certain types of thyroid cancer — especially medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
This test is most commonly used to help screen for, diagnose, or monitor medullary thyroid cancer or C-cell hyperplasia.
Why This Biomarker Matters:
- Tumor Marker: Elevated calcitonin levels can indicate medullary thyroid cancer, even before symptoms appear.
- Cancer Monitoring: Used to track progression or recurrence of MTC after treatment or surgery.
- Screening for High-Risk Individuals: May be used in people with a family history of MTC or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).
When to Consider This Test:
- You have a thyroid nodule or goiter
- You have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2
- You are experiencing symptoms such as:
- Neck lump or swelling
- Hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Diarrhea (associated with hormone-secreting tumors)
Test Details:
- Biomarker Measured: Calcitonin
- Specimen Type: Blood
- Fasting Required: No
