Description

A creatine kinase (CK) test and a creatine phosphokinase (CPK) test are the same thing:

  • What it is: A blood test that measures the amount of creatine kinase (CK) in your blood

  • Purpose: To help diagnose and monitor injuries and diseases that damage muscles, the heart, or the brain

CK is an enzyme that helps make energy in your body. Most of your CK is in your skeletal muscles, but you also have some in your heart and brain. A small amount of CK normally leaks into your blood from muscle wear and tear. However, if your muscles, heart, or brain are damaged, more CK leaks into your bloodstream.

Fasting not required.
