Description

Measures GGT Levels to Assess Liver and Biliary Health

The Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) test measures the level of GGT, an enzyme found primarily in the liver and also in the kidneys, pancreas, and biliary system. Elevated GGT levels can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, pancreatic disorders, or kidney problems.

Purpose of the Test

  • Detect liver disease including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver damage from toxins or alcohol
  • Assess bile duct function and detect blockages or cholestasis
  • Monitor treatment for liver or biliary disorders
  • Often ordered with Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) to help identify the source of liver or biliary disease
  • Used specifically in the diagnosis and monitoring of alcoholic liver disease

Key Points

  • GGT is sensitive to alcohol consumption and certain medications
  • Elevated GGT alone is not diagnostic but is used alongside other liver tests for a comprehensive assessment

Fasting recommended.
