Description
The Hantavirus Test helps identify whether you’ve been exposed to a virus carried by rodents, typically through airborne particles from droppings, urine, or nesting materials.
This test is ideal if you’ve recently cleaned or worked in areas where rodents may have been present.
When Should You Consider This Test?
You may benefit from testing if you:
- Cleaned out a dusty attic, basement, garage, or crawlspace
- Swept or vacuumed rodent droppings
- Worked in barns, sheds, or storage buildings
- Noticed rodent activity in your home or workplace
- Developed flu-like symptoms after possible exposure
Common Symptoms After Exposure
Symptoms can appear 1 to 5 weeks after exposure and may include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Nausea or cough
In rare cases, infection can progress into Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which affects the lungs.
Important Note About Risk
Hantavirus is rare in Georgia and the southeastern United States, but exposure risk can occur anywhere rodents are present—especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas.
Testing is recommended based on exposure and symptoms, not just location.
