Description

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme involved in the breakdown and remodeling of extracellular tissue. It plays an important role in inflammatory processes, immune system signaling, wound healing, and vascular function. Elevated MMP-9 levels may indicate increased inflammatory activity and have been associated with various chronic inflammatory conditions.

Clinical Utility

MMP-9 testing may be useful in the evaluation of individuals with:

  • Chronic inflammatory symptoms
  • Suspected mold or biotoxin exposure
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Persistent respiratory complaints
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chronic pain syndromes
  • Complex chronic illness presentations

Physiologic Role

MMP-9 is involved in:

  • Tissue remodeling and repair
  • Regulation of inflammatory responses
  • Immune cell migration
  • Vascular permeability
  • Extracellular matrix degradation

Elevated MMP-9 Levels May Be Associated With:

  • Chronic inflammatory response syndromes
  • Biotoxin and mold-related illness
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic infections
  • Respiratory inflammatory conditions

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood (plasma)

Fasting: Fasting is not required for this test.

Important Considerations

MMP-9 is a nonspecific marker of inflammation and tissue remodeling. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings, patient history, and other laboratory studies. MMP-9 is frequently utilized as part of a comprehensive assessment of inflammatory and immune system function.
