Description

A Nicotine and Metabolites, Urine, Quantitative (QNT) test measures the levels of nicotine and its metabolites, primarily cotinine, in urine to assess tobacco use and exposure. It quantifies the amount of nicotine and cotinine present, providing a more detailed picture of tobacco use than a simple positive/negative result.

Why it's done:

  • Smoking cessation programs: To monitor compliance and measure progress in quitting.
  • Insurance and employment testing: To assess tobacco use for insurance purposes or as a condition of employment.
  • Medical evaluation: To assess nicotine exposure before surgery or organ transplantation and in cases of suspected nicotine poisoning.
