Description

More than just cholesterol — get a deeper look at cardiovascular risk.

Fasting recommended.

The NMR LipoProfile is an advanced lipid panel that uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to measure the size and number of lipoprotein particles — not just total cholesterol levels. This test provides a much clearer picture of your true cardiovascular risk, even if your standard cholesterol numbers appear normal.

Why It Matters:

Traditional lipid panels only measure the amount of cholesterol, but particle size and number play a critical role in heart disease. Smaller, dense LDL particles are more atherogenic (likely to cause plaque buildup), while larger LDL particles are less harmful. People with normal cholesterol levels can still have high-risk particle patterns — and not know it.

What This Test Measures:

  • LDL Particle Number (LDL-P): The number of LDL particles circulating in the blood; a more accurate risk predictor than LDL cholesterol alone.
  • LDL Particle Size: Identifies whether your LDL particles are small and dense (higher risk) or large and buoyant (lower risk).
  • HDL Particle Number (HDL-P): Higher numbers are generally protective.
  • VLDL Particles: Associated with triglyceride levels and metabolic risk.
  • Insulin Resistance Score (LP-IR): Helps assess risk for insulin resistance and prediabetes/metabolic syndrome.

Who Should Consider This Test:

  • Individuals with normal cholesterol but a family history of heart disease
  • Those with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance
  • Patients already on cholesterol-lowering medication
  • Anyone looking for a more advanced, preventive cardiovascular screening

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Fasting: Recommended for 8–12 hours for most accurate results
