Screening for Mast Cell Disorders & Allergic Reactions

What it measures:

Tryptase is an enzyme released primarily by mast cells, a type of immune cell involved in allergic and inflammatory responses. This test measures the amount of tryptase in your blood.

Why it matters:

  • Mast Cell Disorders: Persistently high tryptase levels may indicate systemic mastocytosis or other mast cell activation disorders.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Tryptase levels often rise after anaphylaxis and can help confirm the diagnosis.
  • Chronic Allergy Symptoms: Useful for investigating unexplained hives, flushing, or swelling.

When it’s ordered:

  • After severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
  • For symptoms suggesting mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)
  • To monitor known mast cell disorders
