Description
A Total Bilirubin test measures the amount of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It is processed by the liver and eliminated primarily through bile.
What Does This Test Evaluate?
Total bilirubin testing can provide information about:
- Liver function
- Red blood cell breakdown
- Bile flow and possible bile duct obstruction
- Causes of jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Certain liver and gallbladder conditions
Why Test Bilirubin?
Elevated bilirubin levels may occur with liver disease, increased red blood cell breakdown, or problems affecting the normal flow of bile. Mild elevations can also occur with Gilbert syndrome, a common inherited condition that affects bilirubin processing.
If total bilirubin is elevated, additional testing such as direct and indirect bilirubin may help determine the underlying cause.
