Description

Vitamin B12 and folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, are both important B vitamins that work together in the body to support many functions, including:

  • Red blood cell production: Both vitamins are essential for creating red blood cells.
  • DNA and RNA production: These vitamins help the body produce the genetic material that builds cells.
  • Nervous system health: Vitamin B12 is especially important for maintaining healthy nerve cells.
  • Immune function and mood: Vitamin B12 and folic acid work together to produce S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), which is involved in these areas.

A deficiency in either vitamin B12 or folic acid can cause a range of problems, including:

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Lack of energy
  • Pins and needles
  • Sore and red tongue
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Muscle weakness
  • Disturbed vision
  • Psychological problems, such as depression and confusion
  • Memory, understanding, and judgment problems

Pregnant women who don't have enough vitamin B12 may increase the risk of their baby developing a neural tube defect.

Fasting not required.
