Description

The 17-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) test measures the level of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. It is an important intermediate in the production of cortisol. Elevated levels may indicate a deficiency of enzymes needed to produce cortisol, most commonly congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This test is also useful in evaluating women with signs of androgen excess, such as acne, irregular menstrual cycles, and excess facial or body hair.

This Test Is Especially Useful If You Have:

  • Persistent or severe acne
  • Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Early or delayed puberty
  • Suspected congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
  • Family history of CAH
  • Elevated testosterone or DHEA-S levels

What This Test Measures

This test measures the amount of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) in your blood.

Elevated levels may be associated with:

  • Nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH)
  • Classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
  • Adrenal hyperplasia
  • Adrenal tumors (less commonly)

Results are often interpreted along with androstenedione, DHEA-S, testosterone, cortisol, and ACTH to help determine the cause of excess androgen production.
