Description
The Aldosterone and Plasma Renin Activity Ratio test measures the balance between two key hormones that help regulate blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels.
- Aldosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps control sodium and potassium levels and maintain the body’s water balance.
- Renin is an enzyme produced by the kidneys that signals the adrenal glands to release aldosterone.
By comparing these two levels, the test can help identify whether your body is producing too much or too little aldosterone, which can lead to irregular blood pressure.
Why This Test Is Important
The Aldosterone/Renin Ratio is used to help diagnose:
- Primary Aldosteronism (Conn’s Syndrome) – Overproduction of aldosterone, often causing high blood pressure and low potassium.
- Secondary Aldosteronism – High aldosterone caused by factors outside the adrenal glands, such as kidney disease or heart failure.
- Adrenal Insufficiency – Low aldosterone production that can cause dehydration, low blood pressure, and electrolyte imbalances.
This test is especially helpful in evaluating unexplained high blood pressure, particularly if it’s difficult to control with medication or occurs at a young age.
Fasting: Not required.
