Description
The Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) test measures the level of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin, a protein produced by the liver that protects the lungs from inflammation and damage caused by enzymes.
Why This Test Is Important
Low levels of AAT can indicate Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), a genetic condition passed down from your parents. AATD increases the risk of developing:
- Emphysema or other chronic lung diseases
- Liver disease, including cirrhosis
Early detection is important because it allows for monitoring, lifestyle adjustments, and treatment strategies to reduce lung damage and manage liver health.
Fasting: Not required.
