A cystatin C test measures the amount of cystatin C in your blood to assess kidney function. Cystatin C is a protein produced by cells throughout your body. 

What the test measures

  • Cystatin C levels: The amount of cystatin C in your blood 
  • Kidney function: How well your kidneys are filtering cystatin C out of your blood 

Why the test is performed 

  • To screen for and monitor kidney dysfunction
  • To detect kidney disease early
  • To confirm a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • To check the progress of kidney disease
