Description
The Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) Blood Test estimates the average blood glucose (sugar) levels over the past 90 days. It is used to screen for diabetes and monitor glucose management in people with diabetes. HbA1C is considered the gold standard for measuring long-term blood sugar control.
Purpose of the Test
- Diagnose Pre-Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes, and Type 2 Diabetes
- Monitor blood sugar control in patients with diabetes
- Help guide treatment adjustments and lifestyle interventions
Testing Recommendations
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA):
- Twice a year for patients with stable blood sugar
- Quarterly for patients with poor blood sugar control
Fasting not required.
