Description

Essential for Cell Growth, DNA Synthesis, and Red Blood Cell Formation

A folate test measures the level of folate (also known as vitamin B9) in the blood. Folate is a water-soluble B-vitamin that is critical for many biological functions, including cell division, DNA and RNA synthesis, and the production of healthy red blood cells. This test is often ordered to evaluate nutritional status, especially in individuals with anemia, malabsorption syndromes, or symptoms of vitamin deficiency.

What It's Used For

  • Diagnosing folate deficiency
  • Helps identify low folate levels that may cause megaloblastic anemia, fatigue, weakness, or cognitive changes.
  • Monitoring patients with malabsorption
  • Conditions like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or alcohol use disorder can reduce folate absorption.
  • Evaluating nutritional status
  • Especially important during pregnancy, as folate deficiency increases the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
  • Assessing causes of anemia
  • Used alongside vitamin B12 testing to differentiate types of anemia and guide treatment.

Additional Notes

  • Fasting not required.
  • May be ordered with vitamin B12, homocysteine, or methylmalonic acid tests to give a fuller picture of vitamin metabolism.
  • Supplementation may be recommended if deficiency is detected.
