Description

The Mold Allergy Profile Blood Test measures IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies in the blood to determine whether an individual has an allergic reaction to common molds. Mold allergies are triggered by inhaling or coming into contact with airborne mold spores, which are tiny fungal particles commonly found indoors and outdoors.

Purpose of the Test:

  • Detect IgE-mediated mold allergies
  • Identify sensitivity to common mold allergens
  • Assist in diagnosing causes of seasonal or year-round allergy symptoms

Common Mold Exposure Sources:

Outdoor Molds:

  • Decaying leaves
  • Compost piles
  • Grasses
  • Rotting wood or logs

Indoor Molds:

  • Damp areas (bathrooms, kitchens, basements)
  • Moisture buildup or unknown leaks
  • Under carpets or around plumbing

Symptoms of Mold Allergy:

Reactions may occur minutes to hours after exposure and vary in severity. Common symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Hives or skin irritation
  • Sore throat
  • Lightheadedness or fatigue

In rare cases, exposure may trigger anaphylaxis, a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction characterized by:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swollen throat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Low blood pressure

Immediate medical attention is required for anaphylactic symptoms.

Fasting:

  • Fasting is not required for this test.
