Description
Infectious mononucleosis (commonly called "mono") is a viral illness most often caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It spreads primarily through saliva, which is why it's often nicknamed the "kissing disease."
Symptoms of Mono May Include:
- Extreme fatigue (often the first and most severe symptom, may lead to sleeping 12–16 hours a day)
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Sore throat (often severe and similar to strep)
- Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Joint aches
- Rash, sometimes with tiny red spots in the mouth
Symptoms typically appear 4 to 6 weeks after exposure.
Test Included
Mononucleosis Spot Test (Monospot or Heterophile Antibody Test)
- A rapid blood test that detects heterophile antibodies produced in response to EBV infection.
- Helps diagnose acute infectious mononucleosis.
