Description

A Pathologist Review of Blood Smear with CBC combines a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with a microscopic examination of the blood cells by a trained laboratory professional, with pathologist review when indicated.

While a standard CBC measures the number and characteristics of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, examination of a peripheral blood smear allows the cells to be visually evaluated for abnormalities in their size, shape, appearance, and maturity.

What Does This Test Evaluate?

The CBC and blood smear may provide information about:

  • Red blood cell size, shape, and appearance
  • White blood cell number and morphology
  • Platelet number and appearance
  • Anemia and abnormal red blood cell patterns
  • Immature or atypical blood cells
  • Changes that may occur with infection or inflammation
  • Findings that may warrant additional hematologic evaluation

Why Consider a Blood Smear Review?

Automated blood analyzers provide extensive information, but certain abnormalities are best evaluated by actually examining the blood cells under a microscope. A blood smear review can provide additional information when CBC results are abnormal or when there is concern about unusual blood cell morphology.

Depending on the laboratory's findings and testing protocol, abnormal or concerning findings may be reviewed by a pathologist.

Who May Consider This Test?

This testing may be useful for individuals with unexplained fatigue, abnormal CBC results, anemia, unusual white blood cell or platelet counts, or other situations in which a closer examination of the blood cells is desired.
