Description
The PT/PTT Blood Test is a combination test that includes:
- PT (Prothrombin Time)
- PTT (Partial Thromboplastin Time)
Together, these tests evaluate how long it takes for your blood to clot and help identify bleeding or clotting disorders, monitor anticoagulant (blood thinner) therapy, and assess overall coagulation function. This panel is frequently used as part of pre-surgical evaluations or to diagnose conditions related to abnormal bleeding or clotting.
Purpose of the Test
- Detect or diagnose clotting disorders (e.g., hemophilia, von Willebrand disease)
- Monitor patients taking anticoagulants (e.g., heparin, warfarin)
- Evaluate unexplained bruising or bleeding
- Assess liver function and vitamin K deficiency
- Screen before surgery or invasive procedures
Who Should Consider This Test?
- Individuals with prolonged bleeding or bruising
- Patients currently on blood thinning medications
- People with liver disease or suspected vitamin K deficiency
- Those with a family history of bleeding disorders
- Patients undergoing major surgery or dental procedures
What the Test Measures
- Prothrombin Time (PT):
- Measures the time it takes for blood to clot through the extrinsic and common clotting pathways.
- Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT or aPTT):
- Measures clotting through the intrinsic and common pathways, helping identify deficiencies in clotting factors.
Abnormal results may suggest a bleeding disorder, clotting factor deficiency, or the need to adjust anticoagulant dosage.
Fasting Required?
No fasting required.
