Description

A retinol binding protein (RBP) blood test measures the amount of RBP in your blood. The test can help diagnose or monitor conditions that affect vitamin A transport, liver function, and the kidneys.

What the test can help diagnose or monitor

  • Vitamin A status: RBP is a sensitive marker of undernutrition and hypovitaminosis A.
  • Liver disease: RBP levels are strongly related to the severity of liver disease.
  • Renal tubular injury or dysfunction: RBP levels can help assess renal tubular injury or dysfunction.
  • Malnutrition: RBP levels can help indicate malnutrition.
  • Diabetes: RBP levels are elevated in type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Fasting not required.
