Description
The Rheumatoid Factor (RF) Blood Test measures the level of rheumatoid factor antibodies in your blood. RF is an autoantibody produced by the immune system that can attack healthy tissues, primarily affecting joints. Elevated RF levels are commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune conditions.
This test helps diagnose, monitor, and manage autoimmune disorders, and can be part of a broader arthritis or autoimmune panel.
Purpose of the Test
- Assist in diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis
- Evaluate autoimmune activity in patients with joint pain or swelling
- Monitor disease progression or response to treatment in RA
- Support evaluation of other autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren’s syndrome
- Provide additional information in differential diagnosis of arthritis
Who Should Consider This Test?
- Individuals with persistent joint pain, swelling, or stiffness
- Patients with a family history of autoimmune disease
- People with suspected rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disorders
- Individuals being monitored for treatment response in RA
- Patients with unexplained fatigue, inflammation, or systemic autoimmune symptoms
What the Test Measures
- Rheumatoid Factor (RF) Antibodies:
- Quantitative measurement of RF in the blood.
High RF levels can indicate rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune conditions.
Normal RF levels do not completely rule out RA, as some patients may be RF-negative.
Fasting Required?
No fasting required.
