Description

Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGF-β1) is a cytokine involved in the regulation of immune function, inflammation, tissue repair, and cellular growth. Abnormal TGF-β1 activity has been associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, immune dysregulation, fibrosis, and certain environmental exposure syndromes.

Clinical Utility

TGF-β1 testing may be useful in the evaluation of individuals with:

  • Chronic inflammatory symptoms
  • Suspected mold or biotoxin exposure
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Chronic respiratory complaints
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Unexplained musculoskeletal pain
  • Complex chronic illness presentations

Physiologic Role

TGF-β1 plays a critical role in:

  • Immune system regulation
  • Inflammatory response modulation
  • Tissue repair and wound healing
  • Cellular growth and differentiation
  • Fibrosis and extracellular matrix production

Elevated TGF-β1 Levels May Be Associated With:

  • Chronic inflammatory response syndromes
  • Biotoxin and mold-related illness
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Pulmonary and systemic fibrosis
  • Chronic infections
  • Certain cardiovascular disorders

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood (serum)

Fasting: Fasting is not required for this test.

Important Considerations

TGF-β1 results should be interpreted within the context of a patient's clinical history, symptoms, physical examination, and other laboratory findings. This test is often utilized as part of a comprehensive assessment of immune and inflammatory function.
