Description

A zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) test measures the level of zinc protoporphyrin in red blood cells to help diagnose and monitor conditions such as lead poisoning, iron deficiency, and anemia:

Lead poisoning: Lead can inhibit the production of heme, a component of hemoglobin that carries oxygen in red blood cells. A ZPP test can help detect chronic lead exposure in adults, especially those who work with lead or live in older homes.

Iron deficiency: When there isn't enough iron available, protoporphyrin combines with zinc instead of iron to form zinc protoporphyrin. A ZPP test can help detect iron deficiency in children.

Anemia: A ZPP test can help assess anemia caused by chronic inflammatory disease.

Fasting not required.
