Description
The Hepatitis B Core Antibody (Total) Blood Test detects antibodies to the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). This antibody develops in response to infection and helps determine if someone has been exposed to the virus.
Purpose of the Test
- Detect past or current infection with Hepatitis B
- Differentiate between acute and chronic infection when combined with other Hepatitis B tests
- Assess immunity status in patients who may not have received the Hepatitis B vaccine
- Screen blood donors or individuals at risk of HBV exposure
What the Test Measures
- Total Core Antibody (Anti-HBc Total): Includes both IgM and IgG antibodies
- IgM anti-HBc indicates recent or acute infection
- IgG anti-HBc indicates past or chronic infection
Why the Test is Important
- Helps identify individuals who were previously infected but may not show symptoms
- Assists healthcare providers in diagnosing liver disease related to HBV
- Guides decisions about vaccination or further monitoring
When to Order
Individuals may need this test if they:
- Have abnormal liver function tests
- Are at risk of exposure to Hepatitis B (e.g., healthcare workers, travelers, IV drug users)
- Are pregnant and need screening for HBV
- Are blood donors or organ transplant recipients
Fasting not required.
