Description
A Key Marker of Protective Heart Health
Heart disease risk isn’t only about harmful cholesterol — it’s also about how well your body can remove cholesterol from the arteries.
Apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) is the primary protein component of HDL (“good”) cholesterol and plays a critical role in reverse cholesterol transport, the process by which excess cholesterol is carried away from blood vessels to the liver for removal.
Higher ApoA-1 levels are generally associated with lower cardiovascular risk and better lipid balance.
Why ApoA-1 Matters
Standard HDL cholesterol levels don’t always reflect how well HDL is functioning.
ApoA-1 provides deeper insight by measuring:
- The number and quality of protective HDL particles
- The body’s capacity to clear cholesterol from arteries
- Overall balance in lipid metabolism
Low ApoA-1 levels have been associated with increased risk of:
- Atherosclerosis
- Coronary artery disease
- Metabolic dysfunction
This Test Is Especially Useful If You Have:
- Family history of heart disease
- Low HDL cholesterol
- Metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance
- Type 2 diabetes
- Elevated triglycerides
- Desire for a more complete cardiovascular risk assessment
What This Test Measures
- Apolipoprotein A-1 concentration
- Reflects protective HDL particle capacity
- Often used alongside ApoB to assess lipid balance and cardiovascular risk
Fasting
- Fasting is recommended for the most accurate results.
