The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a blood test that measures several important substances in your blood to assess your overall health and organ function.
What the BMP Measures
1. Glucose
- A type of sugar that serves as your body’s main energy source.
- High glucose levels may indicate diabetes or prediabetes.
2. Electrolytes
- Minerals that help regulate fluid balance, pH balance, and the movement of nutrients and waste in the body.
- Includes: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, and Carbon Dioxide.
3. BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and Creatinine
- Waste products filtered from the blood by the kidneys.
- Helps evaluate kidney function.
4. Calcium
- An essential mineral for nerve, muscle, and heart function, as well as bone health.
