Description
A CD4 count measures the number of CD4 cells (a type of white blood cell) in a cubic millimeter of blood. CD4 cells are crucial for a healthy immune system, and this test is especially important for people living with HIV.
Understanding CD4 Counts
- Normal CD4 Count: For healthy adults and teens, a normal count is 500–1,200 cells/mm³.
- Low CD4 Count: A count below 500 cells/mm³ indicates that HIV may have weakened the immune system.
- AIDS Diagnosis: A count of 200 cells/mm³ or fewer signifies AIDS, putting individuals at high risk for serious infections or cancers.
Fasting: Not required.
