Description
The immune system is a very complex integration of systems to help the body fight pathogens and manage the development of abnormal cells. If there are deficiencies you and your primary care provider or specialist may take action to improve your immune system.
This panel includes the following test:
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
HIV-1/2 Antigen and Antibody
Immune Globulin
Fasting not required.
Additional information about each test is listed below:
A complete blood count (CBC) is important for assessing immunity because it measures the number of white blood cells (WBCs) in your blood, which are the primary cells responsible for fighting infections, thus giving insight into the strength and function of your immune system; abnormal WBC counts can indicate an infection, allergic reaction, autoimmune disease, or other immune system issues.
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is important for immunity because high levels of HbA1c, indicating poorly controlled blood sugar, can significantly impair the function of the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and potentially worsening the severity of existing infections due to compromised immune cell activity; essentially, consistently high blood sugar can weaken the body's ability to fight off disease.
An HIV-1/2 antigen and antibody test is important because it allows for early detection of HIV infection, which is crucial for preserving immunity by enabling prompt treatment and preventing further immune system damage caused by the virus; early diagnosis means individuals can start medications to manage their HIV, reducing the risk of developing AIDS and potentially transmitting the virus to others.
Immune globulin testing is important because it measures the levels of antibodies (immunoglobulins) in your blood, which are crucial for a healthy immune system, allowing your body to fight off infections by identifying and attacking foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses; therefore, testing helps identify potential weaknesses in your immune system, allowing for early diagnosis and management of conditions like immunodeficiency disorders, autoimmune diseases, or chronic infections where antibody levels may be abnormally low or high.
Fasting not required.
