Description
A Lead Blood Test measures the amount of lead (Pb) circulating in your bloodstream. Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can accumulate in the body over time and interfere with the function of the brain, nervous system, kidneys, and other organs. Even low levels of lead exposure can have harmful effects—especially in children and pregnant women.
This test helps identify recent or ongoing exposure to lead, allowing early intervention before symptoms or long-term damage occur.
What the Lead Blood Test Detects:
- Current blood lead level (BLL) — the amount of lead in whole blood, measured in micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL)
- Recent or ongoing exposure to lead from environmental, occupational, or lifestyle sources
- Potential risk for lead toxicity and related complications such as anemia, kidney stress, or neurological symptoms
Ideal For Individuals Who:
- Live or work in environments with potential lead exposure (older homes, industrial sites, battery plants, or areas with lead plumbing)
- Have children in homes built before 1978, where lead-based paint or dust may still be present
- Experience unexplained fatigue, headaches, memory issues, or abdominal pain
- Work in or around metalworking, construction, painting, or firearms
- Are pregnant or planning pregnancy (since lead can transfer to the developing baby)
- Have elevated blood pressure, kidney issues, or fertility problems without clear cause
Why This Test Matters
Lead is a non-essential and harmful element—the body has no use for it, and there is no safe level of exposure. Detecting elevated lead levels early allows you and your healthcare provider to identify exposure sources, remove them, and prevent long-term damage.
Fasting not required.
