Description
A magnesium serum blood test measures the amount of magnesium in your blood. It's used to check for abnormal levels of magnesium, which can indicate an underlying condition.
Why it's done
- A doctor may order a magnesium test if you have symptoms like weakness, nausea, cramping, or an irregular heartbeat.
- A doctor may also order a magnesium test if they suspect you have a condition that affects your kidneys or intestines.
- A doctor may order a magnesium test to monitor patients with preeclampsia who are being treated with magnesium sulfate.
What it measures
Magnesium deficiency
- Also known as hypomagnesemia, this condition occurs when magnesium levels are too low. It can be caused by not eating enough magnesium-rich foods, or by conditions that prevent your body from absorbing enough magnesium.
Hypermagnesemia
- This condition occurs when magnesium levels are too high. It's uncommon, but it can happen in people with kidney failure.
What magnesium does
- Magnesium is an electrolyte that helps your muscles contract and relax, your nerves send signals, and your heart beat normally.
- It also helps regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and it's needed for your body to absorb calcium.
Fasting not required.
