Description
CA-125 is a protein found in the blood that can be used as a tumor marker to help screen for and monitor certain cancers, particularly ovarian cancer.
Why the CA-125 Test Is Important
Ovarian Cancer:
- Elevated CA-125 levels are often found in individuals with ovarian cancer.
- The test can help detect early signs of ovarian cancer in high-risk individuals.
- CA-125 levels are also useful for monitoring treatment effectiveness and checking for recurrence.
Other Cancers:
- CA-125 levels can sometimes be elevated in other types of cancer.
Other Conditions:
- Certain non-cancerous conditions can also raise CA-125 levels, including:
- Inflammatory diseases
- Recent surgery
- Uterine fibroids
- Menstrual cycle changes
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Liver cirrhosis
- Diverticulitis
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Peritonitis
