The most common types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90-95% of all diagnosed cases in adults. People with diabetes are at higher risk of serious health complications, such as heart disease, nerve damage, eye problems, and kidney disease. It is helpful to determine the type of diabetes you must be sure you are properly treated. It is recommended by the American Endocrine Society for people with diabetes to have routine lab evaluation every 3 or 6 months to help prevent complications like heart disease, eye disease and kidney disease.
