A pregnancy lab test measures the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood or urine. The results of a pregnancy test are reported as positive or negative:
· Positive: Indicates pregnancy
· Negative: Indicates it’s highly unlikely you are pregnant
Pregnancy tests can be used to:
· Confirm or monitor a pregnancy.
· Identify an ectopic pregnancy.
· Evaluate a pregnancy at risk.
· Confirm a pregnancy before medical treatments.
· Assess the age of a fetus.
· Screen for Down syndrome.
· Monitor a pregnancy at risk of miscarriage.
· Diagnose gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD).
There are two types of blood tests for pregnancy:
· Qualitative: Determines if the hCG hormone is present.
· Quantitative: Measures how much hCG is present.
Current blood testing is available to help determine the sex of the baby early in pregnancy. The Pro Sonus test is available.
